Karim Ajlani overcame the combination of excessive brake wear and sweltering weather conditions to finish fourth in class at the 4 Hours of the Red Bull Ring – round three of this year’s European Le Mans Series – held at the Austrian Grand Prix venue last weekend (July 19/20).

Teaming up with regular co-drivers Alex Brundle and Ricardo Gonzalez, the Swiss-Syrian contributed to the trio’s strong performance in the GTC category by producing a consistent, error-free stint aboard their ART Grand Prix-run #99 McLaren 12C GT3.

But despite their metronomic effort, the crew ultimately had to settle for fourth behind the gaggle of Ferrari 458 Italias, which still enjoyed a timing advantage during pit-stops courtesy of a different fuel flow restrictor.

Lining up sixth in class, Gonzalez took the start under a blazing sun and was able to mix it with the frontrunners throughout his double stint before handing over to Ajlani. The team had identified the McLaren’s brakes as a potential source of concern ahead of the race, but Karim was able to drive around the issue and keep the car in the hunt ahead of Brundle’s 50-minute run.

Indeed, Ajlani’s efforts ensured the crew’s Pro driver was in prime position to attack from the start of his stint, and had climbed to fourth by the time Gonzalez returned for the final time.

Round four of this year’s ELMS takes place at Paul Ricard on September 13/14.
